We’d love to know. :)
In case you’re new to the blog or are unfamiliar with the term, Veganuary is a worldwide movement and charity that encourages people to try veganism this whole month of January (and even beyond, if you can keep it up; we hope so!).
When you first hear it, it sounds kind of fun – more like a cool play on words. It is. But the reasons behind it, and the results, carry more weight. Because a plant-based lifestyle doesn’t just promote animal welfare, and help you make environmentally friendly choices; it changes you inside and out, and hopefully for the better too.
How do we know? We only have to ask Jaslyn, our founder. :) At the word “Veganuary”, she immediately thinks of this: “Inspiring people to learn about this lifestyle, and to try it out for themselves!”
But on a deeper level, it’s also made her think about how much Veganuary and veganism – and her journey because of them – have shaped her in so many ways. Here are just some of the things that Jaslyn appreciates as she practises and moves forward with her cruelty-free, sustainable approach. They’re also examples of how Veganuary can mean hope, courage, potential, and endless possibilities.
Do you envision yourself eventually experiencing these too? :)
1. You look and feel good
“My overall health and skin improved when I stopped consuming dairy,” says Jaslyn.
2. It points you in a positive direction
“I have the desire and drive to create change within the community.”
3. It helps clarify your thoughts and goals
“I started having aspirations and knew what I wanted to do. Previously I just felt lost and thought I had to take the usual route – go to university after Polytechnic and get a 9-to-5 job. I tried it for eight months after graduating from Poly, and that’s when I knew that it wasn’t the route for me.”
4. The simple life is empowering
“I don’t feel the need to purchase new apparel or accessories anymore. I was okay with carrying the same tote bag throughout the year and re-wearing my clothes every week. Previously I had this mindset of ‘If I wore this once, I shouldn’t wear it again within the same week or month’, which I’m sure every girl does too, hahaha. It was ridiculous. I’ve stopped spending so much and stopped being materialistic.”
5. You make meaningful connections
“Hanging out with people who have the same aspirations, who don’t judge my lifestyle, truly helped too. I was able to understand them, open myself up and feel more comfortable being me. Previously I had a group of friends who were always talking about the latest trends, the latest luxury item – I couldn’t keep up because those were so foreign to me!”
So how about it? Are you ready to take on the pledge, and invite your friends and family along for the ride? Whether or not you’re new to Veganuary, tell us what you think, and how you’re enjoying it. :)
Or why not stick with us and follow the blog? We have a lot of articles and features in store – like eco-warriors who are eager to share their wisdom about going green, just to name a few. It’ll be exciting. :)
