Instead of hopping on a plane and travelling to far-off places, why not save time, effort and a few dollars by exploring your area – or even doing nothing at all? You have your friends and family to keep you company, and an array of vegan and zero waste necessities to make sure your mind and body are well taken care of. Felicia, for one, tells us we only need two days and one night – and a few things – to refresh ourselves. Describing herself as “a corporate woman who’s trying her best to adopt a zero waste lifestyle”, she posts about her zero waste journey and recommendations via @richgreenpoon on Instagram and her blog. Use her tips and experiences here to create your own version of a local escape.
So you’ve scheduled a weekend staycation with your loved ones – good for you.
You want to let go and have fun, but then you also think: Could you possibly pamper yourself while staying eco-friendly at the same time? The answer is yes… because I’ve got you covered.
Choose your accommodations
It’s your time to relax, and you can easily do that at home. But if you do have some money to spare, I suggest that you spend a little more and book a hotel room with a bathtub.
(Regardless, you can do any of the following wherever you decide to be.)
If you are opting for a hotel, bring along your swimsuit for the pool or your gym clothes. Keeping fit is also an important part of taking care of yourself.
Of course, you’d need to pack some zero waste essentials:
• A bamboo toothbrush
• DIY zero waste toothpaste
• Zero waste shampoo
• Zero waste conditioner (optional)
• Favourite waste-free face masks
• Favourite hair mask or treatment
• Bath bomb
• Minimal-waste skincare
• Reusable cotton pads
Go for some pre-dinner pampering
After a day of watching TV or spending some quality time together, a lovely dinner is a must; set it up at your favourite restaurant.
We pick Alley on 25 at Andaz Singapore (they have vegan, vegetarian, gluten-free and sustainable seafood options)
By late afternoon, you can start washing up and giving your hair some TLC. Using an eco-friendly product for your hair, take the time to apply the treatment and let it sit. Indulge yourself with a soothing massage while you’re at it.
Remember, avoid the complimentary hotel toiletries and use your own. I typically just use my shampoo bar because it doubles as a body cleanser. A conditioner is optional, as we had the hair treatment earlier.
Don’t forget to read the signs
Have a night-time self-care session
Back at the hotel from your dinner, you can start the water for a bath. While the water’s running, give your skin some love: Remove your makeup with your cleansing oil or water and reusable cotton rounds. Rinse and then apply your face mask. Get one that suits your skin’s condition; I have combination-oily skin, so I need one that helps to prevent inflammation and perks up my skin. Clay masks also help to deep-cleanse skin by drawing gunk from pores.
These are my holy grails
Let your mask sit on your skin – which is also the same time you should throw the bath bomb in your tub. (Go ahead and take a video of the lovely colours while you’re at it.)
When your bath is ready, give your body a good soak. When done, rinse off any soapy residue and dry.
A staycation may also be ideal for doing an intensive skincare routine. I slap on toners, moisturisers and serums, and finish it off with a luxurious overnight hydrating sleeping pack.

Get ready for bed
Don’t forget to brush your teeth with your bamboo toothbrush and zero waste toothpaste.
Wake up with a smile
I actually recommend removing your blackheads in the morning! Check out my guide here.
This is also your chance to fully enjoy, and not miss, breakfast. Generally, utensils here are reusable so that’s great. Try not to use disposable coffee or tea stirrers, and opt for a teaspoon instead.
Isn’t it simple? It’s a staycation where you can love yourself from head to toe. Personally, this has helped me to relax from the week’s stressors and get ready for the week ahead. I kid you not, but the bathtub is a make-or-break factor.
Here I am, feeling renewed
